Manage reference data for an Azure Time Series Insights Gen 1 environment using C Sharp
Note
The Time Series Insights service will be retired on 7 July 2024. Consider migrating existing environments to alternative solutions as soon as possible. For more information on the deprecation and migration, visit our documentation.
Caution
This is a Gen1 article.
This article demonstrates how to combine C#, MSAL.NET, and Microsoft Entra ID to make programmatic API requests to the Azure Time Series Insights Gen 1 Reference Data Management API.
Tip
View GA C# code samples at https://github.com/Azure-Samples/Azure-Time-Series-Insights.
Summary
The sample code below demonstrates the following features:
Acquiring an access token using MSAL.NET PublicClientApplication.
Sequential CREATE, READ, UPDATE, and DELETE operations against the Gen 1 Reference Data Management API.
Common response codes including common error codes.
The Reference Data Management API processes each item individually and an error with one item does not prevent the others from successfully completing. For example, if your request has 100 items and one item has an error, then 99 items are written and one is rejected.
Prerequisites and setup
Complete the following steps before you compile and run the sample code:
Provision a Gen 1 Azure Time Series Insights environment.
Create a Reference Data set within your environment. Use the following Reference Data scheme:
Key name Type uuid String Configure your Azure Time Series Insights environment for Microsoft Entra ID as described in Authentication and authorization. Use
http://localhost:8080/
as the Redirect URI.Install the required project dependencies.
Edit the sample code below by replacing each #PLACEHOLDER# with the appropriate environment identifier.
Run
dotnet run
within the root directory of your project. When prompted, use your user profile to sign in to Azure.
Project dependencies
It's recommended that you use the newest version of Visual Studio and NETCore.app:
- Visual Studio 2019 - Version 16.4.2+
- NETCore.app - Version 2.2.8
The sample code has two required dependencies:
- MSAL.NET Microsoft.Identity.Client - 4.7.1 package.
- Newtonsoft.Json - 12.0.3 package.
Add the packages using NuGet 2.12+:
dotnet add package Newtonsoft.Json --version 12.0.3
dotnet add package Microsoft.Identity.Client --version 4.7.1
Or:
Declare a
csharp-tsi-msal-ga-sample.csproj
file:<Project Sdk="Microsoft.NET.Sdk"> <PropertyGroup> <OutputType>Exe</OutputType> <TargetFramework>netcoreapp2.1</TargetFramework> <LangVersion>latest</LangVersion> <RootNamespace>csharp-tsi-msal-ga-sample</RootNamespace> <RunWorkingDirectory>$(MSBuildThisFileDirectory)</RunWorkingDirectory> </PropertyGroup> <ItemGroup> <PackageReference Include="Microsoft.Identity.Client" Version="4.7.1.0" Culture="neutral" PublicKeyToken="0a613f4dd989e8ae" /> <PackageReference Include="Newtonsoft.Json" Version="12.0.3" /> </ItemGroup> </Project>
Then run
dotnet restore
.
